More Than Ordinary by Bryan Wilson
February 9, 2022-March 4, 2022

January 17 – March 4, 2022
“More Than Ordinary” reveals the story of an artist who reveres the balance of family, creative pursuit, and personal conviction. The exhibition presents a collection of nearly twenty representational oil paintings merging multiple ongoing series by Charlotte-based artist and educator, Bryan Wilson. As a father of two daughters, the impact of day-to-day quality time with evolving young women is prevalent within the context of his creative work. Selections from an earlier series entitled “Balance: My Juggling Act” offer a glimpse into the artist’s personal life, involving interactions with his family within the context of their home. Selections from a recent portrait series entitled “Naturally Speaking” aim to accentuate the natural beauty and charm of the “everyday Black woman,” while revealing a devotion to celebrating natural hair. Additional selections seek to honor “Ordinary Heroes,” adding to a positive Black narrative within contemporary art, which the artist is fervently committed to.
Bryan Wilson grew up between New Jersey and Georgia. It was in Georgia, at the age of 16, that he began his artistic career. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in studio art and minor in graphic design from Morris Brown College. Upon graduation, he took a position as a graphic designer for the Center of Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia. A few years later, after getting married and relocating to Charlotte, North Carolina, he began a teaching career and worked to obtain his teaching credentials through the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. In 2012, he decided to take his passion for painting to another level by pursuing an MFA in Drawing/Painting through the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. Since that time, Bryan has continued to create and exhibit extensively throughout the US and abroad alongside many other distinguished and emerging artists. Bryan continues to live, teach, and create in Charlotte, North Carolina.
