Mapping It Out: The Von Hasseln Family and Anderson, SC
January 13, 2022@5:00 pm-6:30 pm
Opening reception: January 13, 2022 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Mapping it Out, our latest exhibit in conjunction with the Anderson International Festival, will uncover the details of J. H. von Hasseln’s journey to the United States in the 1870s and the professions he and his family worked in. It will explore the process of creating the 1897 county map, known commonly as the “von Hasseln Map” after its creator. Our research will come right down to beloved Anderson College professor Henry von Hasseln and the storied music career he enjoyed here in Anderson. When Henry visited Germany, a century after his ancestor sailed for America, the tale comes full circle and highlights Anderson County’s unique connection to Germany.
