Discussion with Author Peter Brewitt: Same River Twice

Wofford College's Dr. Peter Brewitt will visit Hub City Bookshop to discuss his book Same River Twice.

Dam removal was not a realistic option in the twentieth century, and people who suggested it were dismissed as radical dreamers. Over the past twenty years, dam removal has become increasingly common, with dozens of removals now taking place each year nationwide.

How did this happen? Same River Twiceanswers this question by telling the stories of three major Northwestern dam removals—the politics, people, hopes, and fears that shaped three rivers and their communities. Author Peter Brewitt begins each story with the dam’s construction, shows how its critics gained power, details the conflicts and controversies of removal, and explores the aftermath as the river re-established itself.

Peter Brewitt received his PhD in environmental studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he focused on environmental policy. He is now a professor at Wofford College.

SPACE is grateful for our many supporters, the Bonnamoo dinner is presented by Pacolet Milliken and sponsored by the Johnson Group.

Following the dinner, guests are invited to mosey down the hill to enjoy a live performance by the Shane Pruitt Band, a Spartanburg favorite whose music embodies a regional tradition of blues and gospel while bringing its original tone and flare to every performance. Their music has been featured in movies and TV, and their legendary live shows are a testament to the therapeutic powers of foot-stomping, butt-shaking rock-and-roll.

26 Pebbles

26 Pebbles, a theatrical performance of Lander University, will be performed each night at Greenwood Community Theatre in Uptown Greenwood.

The story behind 26 Pebbles:
On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School and killed twenty-six innocent souls before taking his own life. These twenty-six innocent deaths, like pebbles thrown into a pond, created ripples and vibrations that were felt far beyond the initial rings. This is the story of those vibrations.

Food Access Public Meeting

This meeting is intended for leaders of organizations or departments involved in the food system, but everyone is welcome. We need your input on what is working and not working in regards to accessing healthy and local food in Spartanburg County.

Backline – Bluegrass Band at the Carolina Music Museum

Backline, a five-piece bluegrass band who recently signed with Mountain Fever Records. Katelyn Ingardia, guitar, Travis Tucker dobro, Milom Williams II, mandolin, Zachary Carter, banjo, Jason Belue, Doghouse bass &, of course, everyone sings! Most of the music is their own & several of their original songs found the top 10 on the Bluegrass Grassicana & Gospel Charts. Steve Martin, the Bluegrass Broadcaster of the Year, said, “For being relatively young & new as a group, (they have) a close unity that sends you back to double check their pedigree. Beautiful vocals, tight tasty musical support, they are in this as one. Generating all original material with such power is unusual anymore. All of it works like they mined the vast heritage preceding them. In their hearts & souls, they did, but this is all Backline.” Call 864-520-8807 to purchase your tickets. $15 Adults & $5 Students.
