Poets Andrew Dally and Patrick Whitfill will be in conversation at Spartanburg County Public Library HQ for National Poetry Month on Friday, April 12, at 7pm.

On Thursday, April 11, at 6pm, Dr. Rick Van Noy will be visiting Hub City Bookshop to discuss his book Sudden Spring: Stories of Adaptation in a Climate-Changed South. A signing will follow the discussion.

On the last Sunday of every month from 2-3pm, Hub City Bookshop will host a multilingual story hour for children. Join us with your little ones for crafts, snacks, and great stories!

David Bromwich's Cultural Life Program talk, “Power, Passion, and Mark Antony,” is free and open to the public. The lecture is the final talk in the five-part Tocqueville Lecture Series “Love, Friendship and Politics.”

Bromwich is the author of numerous books including “Moral Imagination: Essays” (Princeton, 2014), “The Intellectual Life of Edmund Burke: From the Sublime and Beautiful to American Independence” (Belknap, Harvard, 2014), “Skeptical Music: Essays on Modern Poetry” (Chicago, 2001) and “Disowned by Memory: Wordsworth’s Poetry of the 1790s” (Chicago, 2000).

Born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, the Villalobos Brothers use their violins and voices to blend Mexican folk music with elements of classical, jazz, and rock. In addition to their virtuosic playing, the brothers — Ernest , Alberto, and Luis – also compose their own original music featuring closely mingled harmonies and intricate patterns. Peace Interludes are FREE music appreciation gatherings that unpack the rich traditions and diverse styles of great composers. Each month will feature a unique composer and drink pairing, providing a multi-sensory sip, listen, and learn experience that highlights a musical period.

Much like the divisions of the World Wars during the 20^th century, the musical style also became divided—no single style dominated, providing an opportunity for a wide range of music composed during this time. Radio broadcasting, sound recording, and electric instruments, along with countries either beaten down by or feeling victorious from war, created a diverse environment for music to develop and transform. Join us for a “War and Peace” Interlude!

Introducing the Fine Arts Center Jazz All Stars Concert Series. This new partnership between the Fine Arts Center and the Peace Center’s Community Impact program gives up-and-coming young artists the opportunity to showcase their skills and perform in a professional setting. Featuring students from both the jazz studies and vocal departments, along with Jazz Studies Instructor Steve Watson and Voice Instructor Danielle Knox, these concerts give you the opportunity to see local rising stars.

No Small Matter is a 70-minute documentary film built from stories of real children, families, and teachers, illustrating the impact of high-quality early childhood experiences. We meet parents who are struggling to do their best for their kids, incredible teachers who model what early childhood classrooms should and could be like, and children learning and developing in real time. These positive, hopeful stories serve as motivational tools in both the film and the No Small Matter campaign: Change is necessary, critical, and attainable if we put our minds to it.

In the spirit of progress and innovation from the beginning of the 20^th century, contemporary music pushed boundaries and performance venues. Reflecting the variety of surrealism, pop art, and abstract expressionism in visual art, music branched out with the birth of jazz, Yiddish theater, vaudeville, and Broadway. Join us for tapping feet and jazz hands!

It’s been nearly a decade since Dawes first emerged from Southern California, carrying with them a roots-rock sound that nodded to the past – including the West Coast folksingers and cosmic country-rockers who chased a similar muse during the 1970s – while still pushing forward.

Over the years that followed their debut, the band evolved and electrified. The grooves deepened. The amplifiers grew louder. Once known for their honest approach to classic sounds, Dawes grew into something different: a forward-thinking, boundary-pushing band for the 21st century, willing to follow inspiration wherever it leads. On the group’s sixth album, Passwords, that inspiration pulls guitarist/singer Taylor Goldsmith, drummer Griffin Goldsmith, bassist Wylie Gelber, and keyboardist Lee Pardini into their most universal, topical territory to date.

How do we speak of place? Are lineage and place geographical, cultural, emotional, and spiritual? Alicia Jo Rabins and Kevin Coval are privy to the traditions, rituals, and struggles of being Jewish Americans. Rabins is a writer, musician, composer, performer, and Torah teacher. Her work explores the intersection of ancient wisdom texts with everyday life. Coval is a poet and community builder. As the artistic director of Young Chicago Authors, founder of Louder Than A Bomb, and professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago—where he teaches hip-hop aesthetics—he’s mentored thousands of young writers, artists, and musicians. These poets stem from very different literary traditions, but both have so much to contribute about lineage and place and how they write about it.

Master Classes give students and developing writers the chance to learn from professional poets prior to a Poetic Conversation. Each master class is a unique and intimate experience shaped by each artist, their writing process, and their work.

Gibson will read from her novel, Beyond the Point, and then participate in a Q&A with the audience. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception in Furman Hall 217.

Beyond the Point” is set at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where three women—a nationally-ranked point guard, the granddaughter of an Army general and a rebellious Homecoming Queen—are brought together in a story of friendship, heartbreak and resilience.

Copies of the book, published by HarperCollins, will be available at the event and at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on campus.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, 38 jetliners bound for the United States were rerouted for Gander International Airport on the island of Newfoundland. Gander residents greeted stranded passengers with overwhelming kindness, providing for their needs and creating friendships that will last a lifetime.
