Hub City Empty Bowls will have its second public bowl-making session of 2019 at West Main Artists Co-op on Saturday, June 8, 1-4 p.m. Everyone is invited to come make pottery bowls that will later be used as a fundraiser to feed the needy in Spartanburg. There is no cost to make bowls and all instructions and materials are provided. This is your chance to help feed the needy people of Spartanburg and be creative at the same time. Bowl-making events are great for families or anyone with a creative itch and the desire to do good in Spartanburg.

It only takes one glance for her to fall head over heels for dashing shooting ace Frank Butler, who headlines the show. She soon eclipses Butler as the main attraction of the show, which, while good for business, is bad for romance. Butler hightails it off to join a rival show, his bruised male ego leading the way, but is ultimately pitted against Annie in the final shoot-out. The rousing, sure-fire finale hits the mark every time in a testament to the power of female ingenuity.

Drum4Work – 10:00am – 11:30am There will be lots of other things to see on June 15th as Hagood Mill hosts a variety of folklife and traditional-arts demonstrations. There will be blacksmithing, bowl-digging, flint-knapping, chair-caning, moonshining, broom-making, basket making, pottery, quilting, spinning, knitting, weaving, woodcarving, metalsmithing, beekeeping, bobbin lace, and leatherworking demonstrations and much more! We encourage visitors to ask questions of the artists, gain insight, and if you wish, spend a little money to secure a Traditional Arts treasure of your own. As always, we encourage visitors to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the show. Visitors are also welcome to bring their favorite old-time instruments and join in the “open jam” which typically takes place throughout the day under the ancient cedar beside our beloved 1791 log cabin. The Centerpiece of the Hagood Mill Historic Site is the water-powered 1845 gristmill. It is one of the finest examples of nineteenth-century technology in the Upcountry and operates just as it has for the last century and a half. The mill will be running throughout the day. In the old mill, fresh stone-ground cornmeal, grits, and wheat flour will be available. In addition, rye flour, Basmati rice flour, oat flour, oatmeal, popping cornmeal and grits, organic yellow corn meal and grits, and buckwheat flour are produced and may be available. Hagood Mill cookbooks and a variety of other mill-related items are also available. |

The Laurens County Workshop will take place on June 13th with the focus being on Cultivating Community Investment. Allen Smith, the President and CEO of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, will share how Spartanburg has created a community culture that is investing in a wide range of initiatives that are helping to grow the physical infrastructure and the social capital within the Spartanburg community. Also participating in the program will be Greenwood County Council Member Theo Lane, Greenville area Community Volunteer Lisa Stevens and Greenwood Area Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Angelle LaBorde. In addition, leaders from within Laurens County will share some potential ideas and opportunities for cultivating community investment within Laurens County. This Tony Award-winning musical based on the best-selling graphic novel by Alison Bechdel runs June 7-16 in the Venue at the West Main Artists Co-Operative. Groundbreaking and often heartbreaking, “Fun Home” depicts the author at three different ages as she recalls growing up in her family’s FUNeral home, her first year of college, and her relationship with her father.

Led by Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig, the tour brought a message of music, love, and acceptance to communities and individuals confronting intolerance. Over 300 singers traveled from Mississippi to Tennessee through the Carolinas and over the bridge in Selma, performing in churches, community centers, and concert halls. The journey challenged Seeling and other chorus members who fled the South to confront their own fears, pain, and prejudices on a journey towards reconciliation. The film, which highlights First Baptist Greenville and Pastor Jim Dant, shows what happened when the lines that often divide us—faith, politics, and sexual identity—were erased through the soaring power of music, humanity, and a little drag. The screening will be followed by a Q&A panel discussion with the film’s director David Charles Rodrigues, Executive Director Christopher Verdugo, Producer Bud Johnson, Gay Chorus Conductor Dr. Tim Seelig, and First Baptist Greenville Pastor Jim Dant. The documentary comes to Greenville after making its world premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.
The band is a member of the Carolina Beach Music Association, (CBMA), and several band members have been nominated for awards by CBMA during past years. The Carolina Coast Band travels with a seven piece band, which includes an award-winning horn section that has backed artists such as Chicago and the Temptations. They provide an action packed, high-energy stage presence along with great entertainment. This year, they’ll be accompanied by five-time Carolina Beach Music Awards female vocalist of the year, Rhonda McDaniel.
The Entertainers were founded In 1980 and scored their first regional smash hit with “Living For The Summer” that same year. This song helped propel the group to the forefront of beach music, which led to their playing the finest clubs along the grand strand of Myrtle Beach, corporate conventions, weddings and festivals from Washington, DC to Naples, Florida. While staying true to their R&B and Beach Music roots, the group also satisfies the most diverse audiences by playing selections from the latest Top 40, Classic Rock & Roll and Country music. The group’s years of performing experience and recording prowess culminated in the release of their latest album entitled, “The Inside Story”. This record, which contains the #1 Beach Music hit, “Thank Goodness She Cheated” and Classic Beach and Soul hits, will surely lead you to the dance floor with a smile on your face.
The Soldiers of the 246 Army Band have proudly served their State and Nation since their inception in 1939 as a part of the 178th Field Artillery. Their historic and distinguished lineage dates back to performances in numerous campaigns since and including World War II. The 246th has been by name requested to perform at such distinguished venues as Senator Strom Thurmond’s funeral and South Carolina Gubernatorial Inaugurations. The 246th has traveled to the Dominican Republic, Hawaii, Guam, Maryland, Mississippi, Georgia and Key West in recent years for concerts. In addition to these venues, the 246th has a regular concert schedule around the great state of South Carolina to include military ceremonial performances, patriotic holidays and community events. This show will end in a fireworks display!
The later part of the sixties saw the group bring in a horn section, featuring Freddy Tripp and Jimmy Smith, which brought a big change in the music. In 1970, Chuck French (trumpet), Gary Warren (sax), Randy Hignite (keyboards), and Jim Heidenreich (drums), joined original members Johnnie Byrd (bass), Buddy Johnson (vocals) and Keith Houston (guitar) to form the newly re-named Band of Oz. In 1971, Billy Bazemore replaced Buddy Johnson on vocals. Through the early seventies they continued playing the frat parties, private functions, and clubs in the Southeast. In late 1976, the band decided to try it as a full time band with members were Chuck French (trumpet), Bob Lynch (sax), Ronnie Forbes (keyboards), Shep Fields (bass), Freddy Tripp (trumpet), Billy Bazemore (vocals), David Hicks (drums) and Keith Houston (guitar). They hit the road traveling extensively in the Southeast playing the club circuit. In the late seventies, the band decided chose to concentrate on touring the Carolinas. They recorded and released their first single “Shaggin,” written by Billy Bazemore and Keith Houston, in 1978. The radio airplay and promotion catapulted the group to a new level. In 1979, they recorded their second single “Star of My Life,” written by Chuck French. John Thompson and Butch Barnes joined the group in 1980. John’s baritone vocal gave the group a new facet and Butch’s sax and stage presence enhanced the show. In 1982, the group recorded “Ocean Boulevard,” written and produced by General Johnson and Warren Moise. “Ocean Boulevard” went on to be voted Beach Music Song of the Year and the Band of Oz won Best New Group at the Beach Music Awards. Their first album Keep Keepin’ It Up was released on Surfside Records. In the early 80s, David Franks replaced Mickey Hardy on keyboards; Butch Barnes and Billy Bazemore were replaced by Chris Keaton (sax) and Doug Adams (vocals), who was then replaced by Gary Brown. The group completed and released their second album One More Step, containing ”Over the Rainbow.” After the release of One More Step, the group continued performing 200 to 300 shows each year. In 1991, Butch Barnes returned and the Band of Oz began work on their third album, Let It Roll, featuring “Shama Lama Ding Dong,” which earned People’s Choice Song of the Year at the Cammy Awards in 1995 and remains one of the most requested beach songs of all time. Jerry West replaced John Thompson in the late 90s, expanding the versatility of the group by adding a high tenor lead voice. The band’s lineup then included David Hicks (drums), Chuck French (trumpet), Butch Barnes (sax), Keith Houston (keys and guitar), Rick Strickland (bass), and Jerry West (guitar). Within months of the release of “Dancing in the Streets” Rick Strickland was replaced by David Franks. After working on their last project for more than a year, the Band of Oz released their latest album Over the Rainbow. In March 2005, Band of Oz owners Keith Houston and David Hicks decided to bring a new, youthful sound to the band after Butch Barnes announced that he would be leaving in April 2005 — Scott Fine (vocals and trombone), Tim Morris (vocals and trumpet), and Daniel Morris (saxophone and vocals) joined the band to bring a new youth and a BIG new sound to the band.

The 246 Army Band has been performing for more than 75 years. As the premier touring musical representative of the S.C. National Guard, this acclaimed organization travels hundreds of miles each year presenting a variety of music to enthusiastic audiences. Through these performances, the 246 Army Band fosters the support of the American people for members of the armed forces and their efforts around the state.
This years entertainment will feature “ELoveation.” They are a South Carolina based band that is quickly gaining recognition for their intense musical energy, versatile vocals, sensational style and dynamic sound. The Eloveation experience is a show is like no other. They allow the audience to become absorbed by their high energy and style. Eloveation is an eight-piece outfit with a lead guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and outstanding vocals.
The John Paul II Assembly will sponsor the Greenwood SC Festival of Flowers Flag Day Ceremony at the town square in front of Howard’s on Main, Uptown Greenwood. Father Tebalt will open the ceremony with a prayer and the program will follow with a featured guest speaker. Palmetto Girls Sing will also perform.

Willie Nelson is one of the most successful country music singer-songwriters in history, releasing 68 studio albums and 10 live albums. In 1973, he signed to Atlantic Records and put out Shotgun Willie, which veered into outlaw country, a stark contrast from the mainstream Nashville sound and clean-cut country artists of the era. Alison Krauss is largely responsible for keeping bluegrass music alive and well in the U.S., and she’s got the awards to prove it. Krauss is a nationwide favorite in concert and has been performing onstage since the early 90s and selling out tours across North America since the early 2000s. Freedom Blast was founded in 2009 by the City of Greer as a one-day festival to celebrate our freedom and the men and women who make it possible. From great live music to fantastic fireworks, it's become a tradition for many families. With a kids zone, military tribute, music acts, sky diving, a rib eating contest, lots and lots of funnel cake, AND one of the biggest fireworks displays in the Upstate, you won't want to miss it!

Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina's Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other's lives. THE DIXIE SWIM CLUB focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of thirty-three years.
Last year’s winners were Ninety Six Movie Night at the Park and the First Annual Charles Townes Art & Technology Experiment. Past winners include public art projects, interactive outdoor education, downtown music, a food truck plaza, and more. The key element is that the proposed initiative will increase community vibrancy and sense of place and benefit the community as a whole. The 2019 grant period opened on June 1st with an initial interest form due by August 1st and the completed applications due by September 16th. This workshop will guide applicants through the process, with panelists to include past winners. You’ll hear from Mary Anne Goodman from the Ninety Six Mill Village Association, who successfully applied for a grant to fund a community movie night. You’ll also hear from Coie Switzer and Curtiss Hunter from the Union Environmental Art and Music Festival, who were runners up and received a matching grant—and how they got the support they needed to launch their event a year ahead of schedule. This show will kickoff our first ever comedy series at the PC PAC! Every first Saturday of the month from August through February we will bring in comedians from throughout the Upstate that will leave you wanting more! The Bean and Bailey show includes everything from stand-up comedy to musical songs and parodies, all wrapped up in a quirky friendship between Bean (an organized conservative personality) and Bailey (a random free spirit). They discuss all the important things of life, such as Wal-Mart Greeters, American History, Love, Dating, Marriage, Kids, Doughnuts, Michael Jackson, Elvis, and The Bible, just to name a few. Bean & Bailey believe that Humor is a gift from God that brings people together. Laughter tightens bonds, helps rebuild relationships, and it breaks down barriers so that we can listen. Showtimes are Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13 at 7 PM! Doors open at 6 PM!
The Union County Workshop will take place on July 23rd with the focus being on Cultivating Community Through Entrepreneurship and Messaging. The Union County Workshop is free and open to the public, but advance registration is requested. Dinner will be served from 5:30-6 pm with the program starting at 6:00 p.m..
The Bowling Family combines talent, sincerity and experience to create a memorable concert experience. Their goal for the evening is to usher in the presence of God and celebrate the Christian message. They feel privileged and honored to enjoy the freedom to honor Christ with any and all of their abilities. This group has taken radio and Christian music by storm. They are quickly positioning themselves as the group to watch. As we grow to love this wonderful meld of Crabb/Bowling music our sense of their purpose is obvious. These people love great songs, know how to deliver them, and obviously love God and ministry!
A percentage of all proceeds go to benefit the upstate’s Make-A-Wish Foundation!
The parade will begin from the PC PAC at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 10. The parade will start from the PC PAC on S Commerce St and continue to S Peachtree Street, turning left onto W Front St, wrap back around on S Commerce St, and conclude back on W Main St at the PC PAC. Following the parade will be A Salute to Veterans show at the PC PAC. We are asking that all Veterans register for the parade with the VA office by October 31! Veterans can reach the Pickens County VA office at (864) 898-5926 Please arrive early and be a part of celebrating our veterans! This parade and veterans show is free to the public; however, it is not possible without sponsors and donations.
