My Internship at Ten at the Top

When I joined Ten at the Top this fall, I was excited to become part of an organization focused on bringing people together and strengthening communities across the Upstate. As a senior Communications and Public Relations student at USC Upstate preparing to graduate in December, I wanted to spend my final semester putting what I have learned in the classroom into practice in a way that makes a meaningful difference.

This internship has given me the opportunity to do exactly that, while also learning more about the Upstate, the people who call it home, and the role communication can play in building stronger communities.

No two weeks at Ten at the Top look exactly alike! From developing new visual branding for our programs to sharing regional news and opportunities, I have been able to contribute to a variety of projects while strengthening my communications skills.

I’ve designed logos and branding materials for initiatives, contributed to Ten at the Top’s biweekly newsletter, and written recaps for our Upstate Downtown Academy and Housing Affordability Working Sessions. Each project has challenged me in a different way, whether that means thinking creatively about how design communicates a message or turning complex conversations about regional issues into content that is clear and engaging. These experiences have allowed me to apply the knowledge from my communications background while gaining a better understanding of the issues and initiatives shaping the Upstate.

Some of the most memorable parts of my internship have happened beyond my desk. Through Ten at the Top programs, events, and community gatherings, I have had the opportunity to meet business owners, community leaders, nonprofit professionals, and residents who all share an interest in making the Upstate a better place to live and work. Seeing those connections happen firsthand has helped me understand the value of bringing people together. Ten at the Top creates spaces where people from different communities and perspectives can share ideas, build relationships, and work toward common goals.

I’ve learned so much from working alongside Ten at the Top’s small but dedicated team. Working alongside Justine, Dean, and Lena has given me the opportunity to get hands-on experience with a fabulous organization where I’m encouraged to contribute my own ideas and take on meaningful responsibilities.

Looking Ahead

My time at Ten at the Top has helped me see communications in a new light. It’s about more than sharing information or building a brand. Communication has the ability to bring the community into a conversation, encourage involvement, and help people better understand the issues affecting the places they call home.

As I prepare to graduate from USC Upstate, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from the Ten at the Top team, collaborate on meaningful projects, and become more connected to the Upstate community. I am excited to see what the rest of the semester brings and to continue learning, growing, and making connections along the way.
