Melodic Dreaming, an interactive art & music concert marks the return of Pan Harmonia to the intimate performance setting at Carolina Music Museum on Friday, April 12 at 7:30. This award winning chamber music repertory company, from Asheville, NC, directed by flutist Kate Steinbeck adds fellow flutist James Brinkman & pianist John Crowley for a truly remarkable experience that joins musicians & the audience in a collaboration where both create a work of art! Steve’s hip caused him to miss his slot in the Heritage Green Music Fall Season--thanks to his former student, Matt Dingledine, the show went on but, now, hip replaced--yeah, he’s hip again!--his trio, with Greg Alewine on base, Brendan Williamson on piano, with vocals by Jamey Wright will fill the Carolina Music Museum with jazz from the great American Songbook on Friday night, April 26 at 7:30. An Evening of Mandolin at the Carolina Music Museum


Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass, made the mandolin the centerpiece of one of America’s most popular musical genres, so popular that many think the instrument came from the southern hills his music celebrated. Actually, it evolved from the lute family in Italy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries where it was a classical musical instrument. If you haven’t heard the classical mandolin you owe it to yourself to experience the mind-bending talent of our guest musician, a world-renowned mandolin virtuoso, who will be performing at the Carolina Music Museum Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 PM. Growing herbs isn't difficult, but some of them are a little particular about where and how they like to grow. In this introductory class, we'll discuss choosing a site for your herb garden, some options for dealing with our heavy clay soils, and how to think strategically about sunlight and moisture requirements for different perennial herbs (and you'll be able to see many of these concepts in action in our garden). We can also talk about how to grow specific herbs that attendees are interested in learning more about.

Crisis and Response: Stories of Leadership


Four Furman alumni return to campus to tell their stories of leadership during times of crisis as part of the Riley Institute’s yearlong celebration of principled leadership. Join us as a U.S. Ambassador, a CEO, a CIO, and a former FDIC Legislative Director talk about defeating Ebola, dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline, helping Detroit out of bankruptcy, and pulling the financial system back from the brink in 2008.

Gardening in the Upstate


An agent from the Clemson Cooperative Extension will be on hand to discuss the basics of gardening in the Upstate. If you’re new to the Upstate, or just new to gardening, this will be an informative talk on gardening myths with a questions and answers session. Event is free and open to all.

Louise Dubin, Cellist and Fabio Parrini, Pianist, play Chopin & Mendelssohn


Louise Dubin and Fabio Parrini will present a concert of works for ‘cello and piano by Chopin, Mendelssohn, Auguste Franchomme, Saint-Saens, and two more modern compositions--the 1917 Sonata by Charles Koechlin and the Serenade by Poulenc. Dubin, described as an "artist of refined taste and musicianship" by The Strad Magazine, has performed throughout the US and Europe. Parrini, a Steinway Artist, is Chair of the Piano Department at North Greenville University and a Fulbright Scholar and a Kahn Award winner from Boston University.

A Talk with Rudy Mancke: A Naturalist at Home


As part of our 40th Anniversary celebration, please join us for a lecture with Rudy Mancke on Saturday, April 13th from 4-5pm. This talk entitled "A Naturalist at Home" will be FREE to the public and hosted by Wofford at the Leonard Auditorium.

About Rudy Mancke:
Rudy Mancke is a Spartanburg native, a Wofford College alumnus, and a former science teacher at Spartanburg High School. He is a former Curator of Natural History at the South Carolina State Museum and the founder of the South Carolina Association of Naturalists. Rudy is well-known as the co-host of the long-running SCETV television series NatureScene. He currently hosts the daily NatureNotes segment on SCETV and South Carolina Public Radio.

A Little Bit Country Exhibit


“A Little Bit Country” is an exhibit at the Belton Depot which examines the meaning of “country” historically and currently.  Vintage or antique items on display include a wagon, buggy,mule collars, saddles, chicken coop, rabbit hutch,bee hive, small farm equipment and implements, hit-or-miss engine, water pump, quilts, baskets, wooden ladder, old carpentry tools, outhouse (clean of course!), blacksmithing items, photographs of country scenes, and musical instruments used by country music players.  Country also means “Grandma’s kitchen,” so vintage Pyrex dishes and bowls, a pie safe, rolling pin, biscuit cutter, aprons, recipes and cookbooks, and kitchen decor will be displayed.

Symphonic Winds Concert


Just a few short weeks after leading the Furman Symphonic Winds in a performance at New York’s historic Carnegie Hall, Leslie W. Hicken will conduct the ensemble in its annual spring concert. The concert, which is open to the public, marks the end of Hicken’s 26-year career as director of bands in Furman’s Department of Music. Tickets for the Sound Quality Concert Series event are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors 60 and older, and $5 for students.

The program includes works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Aram Khachaturian, Percy Aldridge Grainger, John Williams, John Philip Sousa, Joseph Wilcox Jenkins, Furman Director of Athletic Bands Jay Bocook, Ottorino Resphigi and Henry Fillmore.

For the second half of the program, Furman alumni will join Hicken onstage to perform with the Symphonic Winds. The concert also marks the last performance on campus for the graduating band members of the Class of 2019.

Upcycled Art Show


Local artists will be tasked with selecting a piece of furniture from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and revamping it. The finished pieces will be on display throughout Drayton Mills MarketPlace and in the Grand Hall. All are welcome to peruse the campus to view and bid on the pieces in a silent auction. The evening will conclude with an announcement of the winners of the silent auction as well as a live auction hosted by ReStore Manager, Joe Walker. All money raised from the auctions will go to Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg.

While onsite for the show, enjoy dinner at Pi-Squared or The Standard, a cup of coffee at Bella Latte, or a craft beer at Holliday Brewing.

15th Annual Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Criterium

Temptations & The Four Tops

THE TEMPTATIONS
The TEMPTATIONS are notable for their success with Motown Records during the 60’s and 70’s and have sold 10’s of millions of albums, making them one of the most successful groups in music history!

For over 40 years The Temptations have prospered, with an avalanche of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world! Beyond their unique blend of voices and flashy wardrobe, The Temptations became known for their sharp choreography known as “The Temptation Walk” which became a staple of American style, flair, flash and class and one of the defining legacies of Motown Records.  Millions of fans saw their Temptations as cultural heroes.  The group had thirty seven, Top 40 hits to their credit, including fifteen Top 10 hits and a quartet which soared to No. 1. on the R &B charts.  They have fifteen No. 1 singles, and seventeen No. 1 albums.  The titles alone summon memories beyond measure: “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg,” “I Wish It Would Rain,”  “I Can’t Get Next To You”, “Get Ready”, “Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me),” “Ball of Confusion”, “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone.” “Beauty is Only Skin Deep”, “Cloud Nine,” “Psychedelic Shack”, “Runaway Child”, “Since I Lost My Baby”, and into the 80’s with “Treat Her Like a Lady”… and many more… For always, the Temptations are sunshine on a cloudy day……

The Temptations were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

 

The FOUR TOPS

The FOUR TOPS were among a number of groups, who established the Motown Sound heard around the world during the 1960’s.  Their first Motown hit, ‘Baby I Need Your Loving’ in 1964, made them stars and their sixties track record on the label is indispensable to any retrospective of the decade. Their no. 1 hit songs include; ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)’, and “It’s The Same Old Song” . Their commercial peak was highlighted by a romantic trilogy; the no. 1 hit “Reach Out I’ll Be There”, “Standing In The Shadows Of Love” and “Bernadette”. Other top hits included; “Baby I Need Your Loving”,  “Ask The Lonely”, “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over)”, “Something About You”, “You Keep Running Away” and “7-Rooms Of Gloom”.

The group’s popularity endured in the ’70s and into the ’80s with hits such as “Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I’ve Got)” and “When She Was My Girl” making them one of the few groups to have hits in three consecutive decades.

 

In 1990, with 24 Top 40 pop hits to their credit, the Four Tops were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Tamassee Craft Brew Celebration

Limestone College Student Recitals

On Sunday, March 31st, senior percussionist Hayden Osborne and sophomore vocalists Mikayla McCleaf and Valerie Turner will present a joint music recital at 3:00 p.m. in Fullerton Auditorium. The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.
