On Tuesday, April 9, at 7pm, writers John Lane and Drew Lanham will be in conversation at Hub City Bookshop. The two will discuss Lane’s new book, Neighborhood Hawks: A Year Following Wild Birds, and the relaunch of Lanham’s Sparrow Envy by Hub City Press. A signing will follow the talk.

In addition to their virtuosic playing, the brothers — Ernest , Alberto, and Luis – also compose their own original music featuring closely mingled harmonies and intricate patterns. Through multidisciplinary acts that include masks, poems, and theatrical sketches interwoven with powerful lyrics and high-energy compositions, the Villalobos Brothers use their unique style to redefine contemporary Mexican music.

Much like the divisions of the World Wars during the 20^th century, the musical style also became divided—no single style dominated, providing an opportunity for a wide range of music composed during this time. Radio broadcasting, sound recording, and electric instruments, along with countries either beaten down by or feeling victorious from war, created a diverse environment for music to develop and transform. This new partnership between the Fine Arts Center and the Peace Center’s Community Impact program gives up-and-coming young artists the opportunity to showcase their skills and perform in a professional setting. Featuring students from both the jazz studies and vocal departments, along with Jazz Studies Instructor Steve Watson and Voice Instructor Danielle Knox, these concerts give you the opportunity to see local rising stars.

• resolve situations causing conflict

We believe that through practicing peaceful conflict resolution our friends, families, and communities will be safer and able to encounter greater opportunities of peace and joy.

No Small Matter is a 70-minute documentary film built from stories of real children, families, and teachers, illustrating the impact of high-quality early childhood experiences. We meet parents who are struggling to do their best for their kids, incredible teachers who model what early childhood classrooms should and could be like, and children learning and developing in real time. These positive, hopeful stories serve as motivational tools in both the film and the No Small Matter campaign: Change is necessary, critical, and attainable if we put our minds to it.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Dance Theatre of Harlem will lead three workshops to fit each experience level. The workshops will include a ballet-based warm-up with exercises that focus on stretching, strengthening, placement, coordination, agility, and musicality, as well as an exploration of dance themes and phrases that are developed into across-the-floor movement combinations.

All shoes are dancing shoes, and everyone is a dancer when Dance Theatre of Harlem brings dancing to the streets to kick-off Artisphere weekend! At 75 years young, Jeanne Robertson continues to charm audiences with humorous observations about life around her. Standing tall at six-foot-two, this former Miss North Carolina has a vivacious personality, heart, and sense of humor.

Robertson tours nationally and appears regularly at the Grand ‘Ole Opry. She has eight nationally released DVDs, three books, hundreds of hours on SiriusXM satellite radio, and over 56 million YouTube views. The demand for Robertson's family-friendly and engaging brand of comedy has grown exponentially. Some of her most popular anecdotes include "Don't Go to Vegas Without A Baptist," "Don't Bungee Jump Naked," and "Don't Send a Man to the Grocery Store."

Master Classes give students and developing writers the chance to learn from professional poets prior to a Poetic Conversation. Each master class is a unique and intimate experience shaped by each artist, their writing process, and their work.

How do we speak of place? Are lineage and place geographical, cultural, emotional, and spiritual? Alicia Jo Rabins and Kevin Coval are privy to the traditions, rituals, and struggles of being Jewish Americans. Rabins is a writer, musician, composer, performer, and Torah teacher. Her work explores the intersection of ancient wisdom texts with everyday life. Coval is a poet and community builder. As the artistic director of Young Chicago Authors, founder of Louder Than A Bomb, and professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago—where he teaches hip-hop aesthetics—he’s mentored thousands of young writers, artists, and musicians. These poets stem from very different literary traditions, but both have so much to contribute about lineage and place and how they write about it.

Train your eye to understand three dimensions and transfer it into twodimensional form using contour drawing, perspective, and value studies using a variety of dry media. No experience necessary, all materials and supplies included.

Gibson will read from her novel, Beyond the Point, and then participate in a Q&A with the audience. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception in Furman Hall 217.

Beyond the Point” is set at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where three women—a nationally-ranked point guard, the granddaughter of an Army general and a rebellious Homecoming Queen—are brought together in a story of friendship, heartbreak and resilience.

Copies of the book, published by HarperCollins, will be available at the event and at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore on campus.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, 38 jetliners bound for the United States were rerouted for Gander International Airport on the island of Newfoundland. Gander residents greeted stranded passengers with overwhelming kindness, providing for their needs and creating friendships that will last a lifetime.
